Sauna III – Immigration

Finland
The Finnish Red Cross accommodates refugees and political asylum applicants to Finland at the Vestaanottokeskus (reception center). Residents here are in a precarious situation as they wait for their immigration status —they may be deported or accepted to reside in Finland any day. For many, the assimilation process to Finland has not been easy, especially with the language barrier and the harsh weather conditions. Not surprisingly, there is a sauna at the center, and as a part of their assimilation routine, the immigrants are encouraged to use it. These photographs are of men from Afghanistan, Iran, and Iraq using the sauna in their own way.
