Mänttä, Finland
This is a two-channel video that features an Iraqi refugee and a city council chair, both of Mänttä, Finland. At their respective kitchen tables (in a Red Cross facility and a farm house), they are interviewed regarding their lives to date. As expected, their lives are extraordinarily different. The Iraqi refugee is from a respected, educated family in Baghdad and the Finnish council chairman is a farmer with roots in the small Finnish village for decades. The common experience that they draw upon is the trauma of war: Winter War in Finland and American War in Iraq. This work was made in cooperation with the Finnish Red Cross and Serlachius Residency, Finland. It was first screened at the completion of the Serlachius Residency.
